How to Start a Daily Meditation Practice

New York-based educator Greg Gerkens has been teaching since 2003 when he started as a teaching assistant in a special education kindergarten classroom. In his free time, Greg Gerkens enjoys many hobbies, including watching sports and meditating.

Regular meditation offers many benefits, such as reduced stress and enhanced focus and decision making abilities. Research shows that to gain these benefits, frequency is more important than duration. That is to say, 10 minutes a day each week makes a bigger difference than 70 minutes in one day. For many, the biggest hurdle to meditating daily is simply beginning the practice and sticking to it.

To start a daily practice, decide when and where to meditate. It is often helpful when starting a habit to try to do it at the same time every day. Many people prefer to meditate in the morning but the most important thing is to find a time that works for your schedule.

Moreover, decide on a length of time. Experts recommend starting with a smaller number, even three minutes so that beginners can slowly increase their practice. Be comfortable. Find a position that works for your body so that you can sustain the practice comfortably. Meditation can be done in any position.

Finally, consider using an app that provides guided meditations to get you started. Over time you can stop using guided meditations and instead guide yourself but an instructor can help get you familiar with the basics of meditating.
